Monday Night Hoops Recap: York’s Season Ends, Three Others Head To State

Howard 56, York Institute 55

The Dragons battled back from 14 down at one point to take a four-point lead, but the effort wasn’t enough in a 56-55 loss to Howard.

The second quarter was where York fell behind, as they were outscored 20-6 and trailed 37-26 at halftime. They battled back by winning the third quarter 17-10, but fell just short in the fourth quarter.

Riley Cooper led the team with 17 points, with Nic Smith following close behind with 16. Jon Heddings and Bryson Bilbrey scored 10 points apiece.

Clay County 64, Cascade 63

The Bulldogs used a tough defensive stand with 11 seconds remaining to clinch their spot in the Class A State Tournament, defeating Cascade 64-63.

Clay held a two-point lead at halftime, and took a 53-47 lead into the final frame of action. There, it was a back-and-forth affair, and the visitors found themselves with possession, trailing by one with 11 seconds remaining.

Ultimately, the Bulldogs held tough and kept Cascade from scoring to win the game.

Grant Strong scored a game-high 40 points, and Jeff Spivey added 10 points. Gunnar Silk scored eight points of his own.

Pickett County 61, Moore County 40

The Bobcats punched their ticket to the State Tournament with their win over Moore County by a final score of 61-40.

After leading 30-20 at half, the Bobcats outscored Moore 31-20 in the second half to increase the lead and close the game.

Zach Amonett led the way with 25 points, while Hunter Wattenbarger added 23.
