Upperman Sweeps District, Both Teams Advance

The Upperman girls golf team won the District 7A golf tournament for the second year in a row under Head Coach Joey Jones.

“We build for this all year,” Jones said. “We come to the Golden Eagle and practice here and our kids come up here on their own. We know this is what we have got to do to make it to the state tournament.”

Senior golfer Juliann Johnson fired the second lowest score of the day on the girls side with a 77. Teammate Haley Jennings carded the third lowest score of the day with a 92. Upperman finished with a combined score of 169.

“What we do as a team, I just think we are really consistent,” Jones said. “The kids have really been working hard and we have a lot of competition within our own team. Once they get to this, it’s not really that much pressure on them because they have had it all year long.”

The Upperman boys took first overall as a team on Monday in the District 7A Tournament in Cookeville.

Junior Cason Mayberry took home first overall as an individual after he scored a 68 to lead the pack. Reece Anderson took home third place with a 77.

Mayberry said that he felt good from the word go, and it all started with the first hole.

“I birdied the first hole, and I was feeling really good,” Mayberry said. “When I made the turn on 10, I was sitting at two-under and I had a little cushion so I though two-under could be enough to win.”

Mayberry was quick to mention his family’s support for his performance today as well.

“It means a lot, I want to say thanks to my mom and dad,” Mayberry said. “They put a lot of time and money into helping me play as well as I did today.”

Other finishers for Upperman included Riley Battilla’s 87, Sam Greenwood’s 88 and William Spillars’ 89.

Both teams will be back in action on Sept. 26 for the Regional Tournament.
