Quarantine and Answer: Jamie Cherry of Lady Cavs Volleyball

Social Distancing is a phrase that will forever be a part of our vocabulary as we move forward. We are going to do a series of questions and answers with coaches across UC Sports Nation and how they cope with this unique time, not only in America but in the World.

Our next coach in the series is Jamie Cherry. Stokes is the head volleyball coach at Cookeville High School.

Question:

What does a typical day in quarantine look like in the Cherry household?

Answer:

We try to make the best out of every situation. We are probably not your typical family. My kids and husband are probably not what you would think of as a typical family. First of all, we got a new puppy.

He wakes us up bright and early, sometimes around four, or five o’clock in the morning. I go get him, everyone else is still asleep. I’m the lucky one that gets up in the morning and gets to take him out.

I grab my devotion and my cup of coffee. So, my morning is kind of chill with my devotion and my cup of coffee and the puppy. The rest of our family gets up. We cook breakfast. We have been cooking breakfast every morning.

If it’s nice outside, our family likes to exercise. We have an awesome neighborhood we can walk or jog in. We work on the laundry a little bit. We have watched a lot of TV.

Which is something that we don’t typically do on an everyday basis. We have been doing puzzles, baking, so we are doing all kinds of stuff as a family which is actually pretty cool.

Question:

Have you watched a good movie lately?

Answer:

We’ve watched Onward. That was a movie that was actually on at the movies. Since the movie theatre is not open right now, they put those movies out where you can watch them. That was a cute little Disney movie.

We have been going back and watching stuff that we had watched a long time ago like A Bugs Life and Shrek and things like that, that we used to watch together when the kids were little. So that’s been fun.

Question:

What is something you look forward to doing the most when this quarantine is over?

Answer:

Well I am a people person and I am a hugger. So those are two of the biggest things right now, you can’t be around people and you can’t touch people. Those are two of my biggest things.

I can’t wait to see my students again to teach. I can’t wait to see my team. I can’t wait to hug their necks. It just makes me appreciate a little bit what we take for granted.

Just kind of get back to normal. See my mom and dad. See my family. See my students and my athletes and give the all a hug.

Question:

Are there any TV Shows you guys are currently watching?

Answer:

I am a Criminal Minds girl. We have been binge watching Criminal Minds.

Question:

What are some of the things you’re cooking at home right now?

Answer:

First of all, I have to let you know my husband is the cook in the house. He is the grill master. So, we have been trying to eat pretty clean and watch what we are eating.

Since we are not able to get as much exercise as we normally would going to a gym. He grills a lot of fish and vegetables and shrimp and things like that.

For breakfast we do bacon and eggs always have to throw in a sweet with cinnamon rolls or apple turnovers or something like that.

Lunches are something usually quick and easy. Something like Hot Pockets or Pizza Rolls or Totino’s Pizza or sandwiches or chips.

Question:

What’s the best thing you’ve read lately?

Answer:

I’m not a big reader. I do read my Jesus Calling Devotion every day. That’s pretty much the only book I’ve had in my hand since we’ve been quarantined.

Question:

Is there anything fun you’ve been able to do with your family over this time?

Answer:

At the beginning we were outside a little bit more and I would get to go visit my parents. My daughter has a jeep.

On the pretty days we took the top off the Jeep and rode around. My daughter had her 15th birthday. Instead of having a party we contacted some of her teammates and told them that we were going to do a drive by at their house.

Our family all got in the Jeep and we drove around to six or seven of her friends houses and it was awesome. One had signs for her. One had flowers. One had a cupcake. It was kind of a social distancing birthday party. That was really cool.

We went to Bee Rock in Monterey and stood at that overlook for a little while. We have played board games and we have been really good at putting puzzles together lately. We have been baking cupcakes and cookies and exercising when we can.

Question:

On those Jeep rides what kind of music are you guys listening to?

Answer:

We are a Praise and Worship kind of family. Our oldest daughter will throw some country in there every now and then.

Question:

Are you trying to stick with your daily routine or lay around in your PJ’s all day?

Answer:

We are PJ’s all day. PJ’s all day! Unless it’s a day we are going to get up and workout. Then we will get up and put our gym clothes on and go for a jog or a walk. But like today, PJ’s all day!
