Johnson Puts Up Stellar Game, Dragonettes Look For Consistency

The York Dragonettes took a tough loss on Tuesday to Cannon County by a final score of 54-42, a game that saw leading scorer Haylee Johnson put up 35 points.

The 2019-20 campaign has seen no shortage of great games from Johnson, though Tuesday’s might stand out as one of her best.

“I coached her in elementary school, I’ve seen a lot of great games from her,” Head Coach Michael Green said. “I told her she had the quietest 35 points that I’ve ever seen.”

That’s the good news for the Dragonettes in the loss. The bad news? No other player made a shot from the field, an occurrence Green knows can’t happen again.

“If (Johnson) would’ve had an off-night, I guess we wouldn’t have scored,” Green said. “(Ellie Leffew and Gabby Beaty) are normally my second and third leading scorers, they were 0/21 from the field. We were lucky not to get blown out of the gym.”

It’s the time of the year where teams are normally leaning on their seniors for leadership and guidance through the final weeks of the season before tournament time begins. Green knows that while his team may be young and still developing talent-wise, nobody is going to take it easy on them.

“I tell them ‘I know you’re freshman, but guess what? you’re still playing,'” Green said. “The other team doesn’t feel sorry for us because you’re a freshman or a sophomore or haven’t played much. They want to beat us and there’s no excuses…we’ve had a rough couple of games and we’ve got Upperman coming up on Friday and that won’t be an easy one either.”
