Van Buren Wins District Tournament Over Coalfield

The Van Buren Eaglettes are now District Tournament Champions, in addition to winning the regular season championship, after defeating Coalfield Thursday night by a score of 3-1.

After the Jackets took the opening set, the host team then took an early 13-8 lead in the second set. Something clicked for Van Buren, as they closed the set on a 17-7 run to take the frame by a 25-20 count.

The Eaglettes took a 2-1 lead after winning the third set, leaving them with an opportunity to end the match in the fourth set. After taking a 24-19 lead, the Jackets made the match interesting by scoring the next three points to cut the lead down to 24-22.

It wouldn’t be enough however, and a block at the net by Riley Scoggins clinched the match and the tournament championship for the Eaglettes.

After the match, Riley and Emma Scoggins, Jadeah McCurry, Gabrianna Young and Greta Rigsby were all named to the All-District Team. In addition, Both Scoggins, McCurry and Rigsby were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Young was named the Tournament MVP.

The Eaglettes will move on to the Regional Tournament, which they will host at Van Buren beginning on Monday.
