Cumberland County Starting From Ground Zero With Fourth Coach In Four Years

Another one of those young teams on the softball diamond is Cumberland County.

For the Lady Jets however, it is a much more nuanced situation.

Their youth, comes in the form not just of underclassmen, but also experience.

More than four coaches in four years, they ended last year with just 5 players possibly returning, 3 or 4 seniors on their way out the door.

Former assistant coach, now head coach Julie Iles was not planning on returning this year, until she got the call to become the head coach, and decided she just wanted to provide some consistency for the program.

After 38 players showed up to an interest meeting, she realized softball was still something that carried weight in the county, it just needed a spark.

In speaking with her we discussed why she took the job, what that spark must be, recruiting cross sport athletes, and what she has loved from her team despite a difficult first month plus of the season.
