Tiger’s Chew Back At State For Second Year In A Row

DeKalb County’s Anna Chew shot a personal best, 65, last Tuesday to win her Region Tournament at the Golden Eagle Country Club in Cookeville.

This week, Chew prepares to play in the State Tournament at Willowbrook Golf Club in Manchester for the second year in a row.

“I know that I am capable of being up there on the leader board,” Chew said. “I’ve never actually hot in the 60’s. It was a personal best for me. I was in the zone and had a good mindset that day.”

With final state rankings and standings up for grabs this week at Willowbrook, this is the time of year for Chew to play her best golf.

“It feels good going into tournament time,” Chew said. “It is exciting to know I am capable of that and that I deserve to be up there on the leader board.”

There is a famous golf quote that golfers the world over have heard. “Drive fro show, putt for dough.” Chew’s putting during Monday’s practice round was shaky early but improved as the day went on.

“The greens did get me a little bit today,” Chew said. ” I think I got a better feel for them… On the back nine I got in a groove. I think I will definitely putt better than I did today.”

In high school golf coaches are not permitted to coach, teach, or correct their golfers during the match. DeKalb County head coach John Pryor admitted she needs little coaching anyway.

“(Chew) is on top of it and she can self correct,” Pryor said. “It’s just a matter of her getting familiar with this course. Which is great because we are so close, which I know she probably played it more than a lot of these girls.

Chew tee’s off at 8:30 on Tuesday on hole number one. Chew is paired with Isabella Van der Biest who is a junior of Dobyns Bennett, last years champion and Alabama golf commit.
