Police: Jewelry Store Employee Arrested After Swiping Over $100,000 In Monthslong Heist

A woman who worked at a jewelry store spent several months stealing small items before selling them at a pawn shop, according to Miami Police.

Authorities say Nubia Torres, 45, supplemented her income by selling tiny pieces of jewelry she stole from the store she worked at on Northeast First Street and North Miami Avenue in Miami’s jewelry district.

In early September, the owner of the store complained that many things had gone missing.

He called police after seeing the store’s security footage.

According to the arrest report, between June and August, Torres was caught on camera repeatedly rearranging boxes of jewelry in the store’s back room while “systematically removing pieces of high-value jewelry in small amounts to avoid detection” before returning to her desk and allegedly concealing the merchandise in her purse.

Among the goods she is accused of stealing are links from a Cuban link chain worth more than $100,000, as well as other gold bracelets.

Detectives believe she intended to sell them at pawn shops after taking them.

On September 9, officers arrest Torres, according to bodycam video.

She faces several allegations, including grand theft and trading in stolen property.

Torres is still in jail on an immigration hold, despite the fact that a judge has set her bond.
