A Buffalo man accused of illegally shooting a deer in Tonawanda has been apprehended and charged with various offenses.
According to Tonawanda police, the alleged incident took place at 6 a.m. on November 28 on Ellicott Creek Road. Police said they responded to complaints of a possible gunshot after a witness reported seeing a dark-colored SUV stopped on the road, several deer nearby, and then hearing a loud bang and seeing a deer fall to the ground.
Officers identified and located the vehicle, and during a traffic check, they allegedly discovered the deer on the floor of the rear passenger area. Two more dead deer were allegedly discovered in the rear of the SUV. Police claimed a shotgun used in the shooting was also confiscated.
According to authorities, 59-year-old Muhibul H. Anher is facing several counts, including second-degree reckless endangerment for shooting a firearm near residential areas and violating a town law by discharging a firearm within town. He was given an appearance ticket and is expected to return to court on December 18.
According to police, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has taken up the investigation into alleged violations of New York State Environmental Conservation Law.
“This situation emphasizes the importance of responsible and legal hunting practices. We are dedicated to protecting our wildlife and keeping our community members safe. I urge anyone with information about this case or similar incidents to come forward,” police said in a release.
