The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a correctional officer following allegations of sexual assault at the Yuba County Jail. A female inmate reported being assaulted by Correctional Officer Matthew Babb on Friday, prompting a swift investigation that led to his arrest on sexual misconduct charges.
According to the sheriff’s office, Babb, employed since July 2020, allegedly took the inmate off jail grounds under the pretense of a medical appointment. Surveillance footage and witness statements, however, indicated that Babb brought her to a location in Olivehurst, where the assault allegedly occurred, and evidence suggests he transported her to multiple sites around the same time.
Sheriff Anderson condemned Babb’s actions, stating, “This conduct is unacceptable, and a betrayal of the trust placed in our office and our correctional staff,” while underscoring the importance of maintaining safety and dignity for inmates.
Babb was booked into Placer County Jail under Penal Code 289.6(a)(2) and is currently on administrative leave. The Yuba County District Attorney’s Office will review the case for prosecution.
The sheriff’s department emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability, pledging to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses. Sheriff Anderson added, “The safety and dignity of those in our custody is a top priority,” assuring that the victim’s protection remains central to ongoing proceedings.
The case highlights the need for vigilance in monitoring those entrusted with authority and reinforces the department’s promise to uphold justice and public trust.
