Woman set on fire by assailant on CTA train in Chicago’s Loop, witnesses say

A massive emergency response rushed to the Blue Line in Chicago’s Loop on Monday evening after witnesses reported that an assailant set a woman on fire while she was riding the train.

Fire crews responded to the area near Clark and Lake late Monday. According to officials, passengers reported smelling smoke, and several witnesses told crews they saw someone pour an accelerant on a woman before igniting it.

CBS Chicago obtained video from the aftermath, showing the victim with severe burns to her head.

One witness said they saw the woman jump off the train as bystanders ran to help her.

Officials say she was transported to a nearby hospital, but what led to the attack remains unclear. Police have not said whether anyone is in custody.

CTA Blue Line trains are currently bypassing LaSalle Station, according to CBS Chicago’s Jermont Terry.
