Woman detained, accused of suffocating 1-month-old child

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office reported that they detained a woman on Friday for allegedly suffocating her 1-month-old child.

According to the CCSO, deputies arrived to the Park Hill area after receiving a 911 call reporting that the mother of a 1-month-old child had suffocated the infant.

When deputies arrived, they discovered the infant lifeless and learned that the mother had fled into the surrounding woods.

Deputies performed lifesaving procedures and successfully resuscitated the infant before handing over treatment to Cherokee Nation Emergency Medical Services medics.

CCSO stated that after ministering to the infant, deputies searched the wooded area with the assistance of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service, an agent from the District 27 Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, and his K9 partner.

The mother was later found hiding around 100 yards in the woods.

The mother was taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center, where she was charged with domestic assault and battery, aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, and child abuse.

According to CCSO, both the mother and the newborn are Cherokee Nation tribal members.

The Cherokee Nation Attorney General will prosecute the mother, or she will face federal charges in the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
