The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) said that detectives from the Financial Crimes Section arrested 45-year-old Erica Hopper of Washington, DC, for allegedly exploiting her 95-year-old grandfather’s finances while acting as his power of attorney.
According to investigators, between November 2021 and June 2025, Hopper made more than $266,000 in illicit purchases, and she has been charged with several theft and fraud counts.
According to the MCPD, “In December 2020, Hopper was granted power of attorney for her then 90-year-old grandfather, giving her authority over his financial affairs and creating a fiduciary responsibility to act in his best interests.”
In November 2021, a worried family member submitted a complaint, and detectives launched an inquiry. The inquiry discovered that from November 2021 to at least June 2025, Hopper made over $266,000 in illicit transactions from her grandfather’s accounts for her own profit.
The investigation discovered that Hopper used her grandfather’s money to pay over $25,000 in new car payments, over $49,000 in credit card bills for cosmetic surgery, luxury clothing and accessories, concert tickets, online purchases, and more than $35,000 in rent for a luxury apartment in Washington, DC.
On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Hopper was charged with stealing over $100,000, a theft scheme over $100,000, getting property from a vulnerable adult over $100,000, embezzlement, and fraudulent identity theft between $25,000 and $100,000.
