Two sisters face charges after a crash that killed three E.E. Smith High School football players and left one sister critically injured.
The incident occurred two weeks ago on Rosehill Road, shortly after football practice, while the sisters were en route to their younger brother’s 18th birthday party.
Dymond Monroe, 21, was driving a Honda Civic carrying several teen football players when the vehicle left the road, killing Jai-Hyon Elliot, 18; Nicholas Williams, 17; and Trevor Merritt, 17. Monroe remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigators allege that Monroe and her sister, Destini Genwright, 19, were racing in separate cars, with Genwright reportedly driving 76 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Genwright appeared in court Wednesday for misdemeanor charges including racing, speeding, reckless driving, and an insurance violation. Monroe faces the same misdemeanors plus three felony counts of involuntary manslaughter; her court date has not yet been scheduled.
Assistant Fayetteville Police Chief Todd Joyce said the tragedy has profoundly affected families, first responders, and the community. Genwright is expected back in court in December.
