Video shows Broward deputy fatally shooting man who pointed gun to his head

Newly released video captures the moment a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy fatally shot 37-year-old Edward Jerrell Dolison, a father of nine, after he stepped outside his home with a gun pressed to his head during a tense standoff Sunday night.

Deputies were called to the 2500 block of Northwest 9th Court after reports of a man, possibly under the influence of drugs, walking around with a firearm while children were nearby. Witnesses said Dolison eventually went back inside his home, where two other people were present.

A perimeter was established, and deputies urged him to come out. Video shows Dolison briefly exiting the home with the gun to his head before retreating inside. Moments later, deputies say Dolison fired his weapon, prompting one deputy to return fire. Multiple shots rang out.

When officers entered, they found Dolison in the living room with a firearm in his hand. A second gun was also recovered inside the home, one with its serial number scratched off.

Dolison was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

His family described him as a loving father struggling with mental health issues. “He was the best father. He had nine beautiful children and loved each and every one of them,” his wife told NBC6 through tears. Relatives questioned why deputies fired, insisting he never pointed the weapon at anyone but himself.

The deputy who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative assignment. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now leading the investigation, which is standard in police-involved shootings.

An autopsy by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine Dolison’s exact cause of death.
