Valley hospitals overwhelmed as flu-like illnesses surge nationwide

Valley hospitals are facing increased pressure as local emergency rooms report a rise in respiratory illnesses this flu season.

“Especially children and the elderly—right now, we’re seeing a high volume of children presenting,” Fresno County Health Educator Leticia Berber told Action News.

Patients with common viruses, including flu, RSV, and colds, are filling hospital waiting rooms.

“Right now, the ER is for individuals with life-threatening injuries or accidents, so let’s leave space for those patients to get treated,” Berber said.

Nationwide, the CDC estimates at least 7.5 million flu-like illnesses, including tens of thousands of hospitalizations and 3,100 deaths. California is reporting “high” activity.

“This is typical for Fresno to see this surge in hospitals,” Berber added. “It’s very common during this time of year because of winter.”

In response, some local hospitals have implemented precautionary measures. Sierra View Medical Center in Porterville is restricting children under 13 from entering several units, and older visitors must be free of respiratory symptoms like fever, cough, or sore throat.

“With all the illnesses going around, what is the safest way to interact with folks?” Action News asked Berber.

“Stay home if you’re sick, stay away from crowds if you have symptoms like sneezing, coughing, or even diarrhea,” she advised.

Health experts recommend testing at home first and then contacting a primary care doctor or urgent care. They emphasize that common illnesses without complications are best treated outside hospitals.

“By choosing the proper place to care for your illness, you give emergency rooms space to treat life-threatening injuries or illnesses,” Berber said, adding that it is never too late to get vaccinated.
