An unknown number of human remains were retrieved from a makeshift desert junkyard in Antelope Valley, investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to KTLA.
Authorities said they were summoned Sunday shortly before 12:30 p.m. when a local resident claimed that her dog had discovered what appeared to be a human skull near 124th Street East and Pearblossom Highway in unincorporated Palmdale.
A large crew of Los Angeles County medical examiners responded to the facility, which is apparently labeled as Speed Motors Auto Repair and Body.
Following a briefing, KTLA received video footage of the investigation, which showed detectives examining the area cluttered with automobiles, appliances, and other heavy items before focusing on a blue SUV and a large storage container.
It is unknown how long the medical examiners remained on the site, but video shows crews leaving, as well as fire and law police authorities.
There were no details released on what investigators discovered, with LASD Homicide Bureau Lt. Vizcarra telling KTLA that it was too early in the inquiry to say how many bodies were retrieved.
This marks at least the third time this year that human remains have been discovered in dubious circumstances.
Celeste Rivas Hernandez, 14, was dismembered and found inside a bag in the trunk of an impounded Tesla in Hollywood on September 8. It was shortly revealed that the Tesla’s registered owner was a multiplatinum R&B musician with apparent ties to the adolescent.
There were no arrests made in that case.
Just one day later, on September 9, another person’s burnt remains were discovered inside a vehicle in a South Los Angeles tow yard. Authorities reported earlier this month the arrest of a 52-year-old woman in connection with the probe.
