An unidentified flying object crashed into a cornfield and exploded in eastern Poland early Wednesday, according to the country’s news agency PAP.
Police said they received reports around 2 a.m. and rushed to the site near the village of Osiny. When officers arrived, they discovered burned metal and plastic debris scattered across the field. The blast shattered windows in nearby homes, but no one was injured, PAP reported.
Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command confirmed later that no airspace violations were recorded overnight from Ukraine or Belarus.
At first, authorities suggested the explosion might have come from a part of an old engine with a propeller. However, Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz later said the object was most likely a drone. Analysts are now trying to determine whether it was military equipment or linked to smuggling, PAP reported.
Lublin District Prosecutor Grzegorz Trusiewicz told reporters that teams of civilian and military investigators are combing through the crash site.
“We have a lot of manpower, we have the army to help us. I hope we’ll finish the operation by the evening,” Trusiewicz said.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, several intrusions into Polish airspace have alarmed the NATO and EU member, highlighting how close the war feels to Poland’s borders.
