U.S. Revokes Visas of Over 50 Mexican Politicians in Drug Cartel Crackdown

The Trump administration has revoked visas from more than 50 Mexican politicians as part of its latest effort to curb transnational narcotics trafficking.

According to Mexico News Daily, the list includes prominent figures such as Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila, Nogales Mayor Juan Francisco Gim, and former deputy Carlos Torres Torres, who all had their travel documents revoked.

Reuters reported that more than a dozen additional lawmakers lost their visas, with the majority belonging to Mexico’s ruling Morena party.

“The Trump administration is finding new ways to exert more pressure on Mexico,” said Tony Wayne, former U.S. ambassador to Mexico (2011–2015).

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated she was not notified before the U.S. took action.

“The U.S. government has been very clear about this, that this is personal information,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference. “It’s not information they share with the Mexican government unless an investigation related to public security is already underway.”

Sheinbaum emphasized that visa matters are handled directly through U.S. embassies or consulates and described the revocations as part of standard American policy.

The country’s first female president has rejected U.S. military involvement in anti-cartel operations but reaffirmed that Mexican police are intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking under her leadership.

A senior State Department official told Reuters that visas — even those held by foreign officials — “may be revoked at any time” for activities deemed contrary to U.S. national interests.

“The Trump administration has had a good working relationship with the Sheinbaum government, and we look forward to continuing to advance our bilateral relationship in the interest of the America First foreign policy agenda,” the official added.

The State Department and Mexican Embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
