Two motorcyclists were hospitalized with moderate to major injuries following a crash on the 5 Freeway near Grapevine Road on Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. as the motorcyclists were traveling southbound in the fast lane. Investigators determined that an SUV in another lane attempted a U-turn through the turn-thru, moving directly into the path of the motorcycles. Both riders collided with the SUV and could not avoid the crash.
One motorcyclist was airlifted to Kern Medical with major injuries, while the other was transported by ambulance with moderate injuries. All occupants of the SUV were unharmed.
Traffic was halted while officers investigated and cleared the scene. By approximately 12:30 p.m., cleanup was nearly complete, and three southbound lanes reopened, according to Caltrans.
