Two motorcyclists sustained moderate to major injuries after crashing into an SUV on the 5 Freeway near Grapevine Road Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when the motorcyclists were traveling southbound in the fast lane. Investigators determined that an SUV attempted a U-turn through the turn-thru, entering the path of the motorcyclists. Neither rider could avoid the vehicle, resulting in a collision.
One motorcyclist was airlifted to Kern Medical with major injuries, while the other was transported by ground ambulance with moderate injuries. All occupants of the SUV were unharmed.
Traffic was temporarily halted while CHP cleared the scene. By 12:30 p.m., cleanup was nearly complete, and three southbound lanes were reopened.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine further details.
