Police have identified the two people killed in a weekend shooting inside a popular Aurora restaurant as investigators revealed the incident stemmed from a past dating relationship.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire just after 9 p.m. Saturday at the Two Brothers Roundhouse on North Broadway. Inside, police found three people suffering from gunshot wounds.
A 24-year-old woman, identified as Jazmine Barclay of Aurora, was rushed to Mercy Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The alleged gunman, 43-year-old Bryan Heineman of Naperville, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 33-year-old man was critically injured and remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
According to Aurora police, a preliminary investigation indicates that Heineman and Barclay had previously been in a dating relationship. Barclay and the surviving victim were on the upper-level balcony of the music room when Heineman entered the building. Authorities believe he learned their location through social media before confronting them. Officials say Heineman opened fire, shooting both victims before turning the gun on himself.
Police confirmed that no bystanders were injured. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Witnesses on social media described chaos as the shooting occurred while the band Beyond the Blonde was performing. Charity Benevelli, the band’s lead singer, said the mood shifted instantly.
“It’s a crazy feeling going from everyone is having a great time, happy, smiling, dancing, and then all of a sudden it is absolute fear,” she recalled.
The Aurora Police Department is urging anyone emotionally affected by the shooting to contact their Crisis Intervention Unit at 630-256-2483. Detectives continue to investigate and ask anyone with information to call the department’s Investigations Division at 630-256-5500.
