A tsunami advisory issued after a powerful earthquake near Russia was first downgraded to a watch and later lifted entirely for much of Southern California’s coast.

The advisory remained in effect overnight, bringing minor tsunami waves to several parts of the California coastline. However, the threat now seems to have largely passed.

All tsunami advisories and watches have been lifted for most of Southern California’s coast following overnight concerns about large waves.

Santa Barbara County remains the only area still under advisory.

Ready Los Angeles County announced on X that the advisory had been lifted, though some areas could still experience sea level fluctuations.

“Decision to reoccupy beaches, marinas, and waterways must be made by local officials,” the post stated.

The alerts were prompted by a massive 8.8 earthquake that struck near Russia on Tuesday, leading to tsunami warnings and evacuations across more than 20 countries.

In Hawaii, the tsunami warning has been downgraded to an advisory.

Hawaii and parts of Japan have downgraded their tsunami warnings, with Hawaii lifting evacuation orders statewide while keeping a tsunami advisory in effect.

Hawaiian officials confirmed that evacuated residents can now return home.

Maj. Gen. Stephen Logan, Adjutant General of the State of Hawaii Department of Defense, explained that an advisory indicates the risk of strong currents, hazardous waves, and possible flooding on beaches and in harbors.

The largest wave recorded reached 5.7 feet above sea level near Kahulu on Oahu.

While no major damage has been reported, some flooding occurred near a hotel on the Big Island.

At the peak of the tsunami alert, tourists were advised to avoid the coast and shelter in place.
