Trump Administration Weighed Navy Missile Strikes on Cartel Leaders, Report Says

The Trump administration privately discussed using U.S. Navy destroyers to fire missiles at cartel leaders or infrastructure in Latin America, according to The Washington Post. Officials also considered expanding cooperation with Mexican forces instead of direct military action.

While President Donald Trump quietly authorized military strikes against cartels, sources said actual approval for missile attacks was unlikely. The administration has ruled out sending U.S. troops into Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum  rejected any foreign troop presence, calling it “absolutely ruled out” and emphasizing strict regulations on foreign agents operating in the country. She confirmed awareness of Trump’s order but insisted it did not involve U.S. military participation on Mexican soil.

The discussions follow the U.S. designation of Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles as a global terrorist group, accusing President Nicolás Maduro and top officials of leading it. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently raised the reward for Maduro’s capture to $50 million.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro warned that any U.S. strike on Venezuela would be treated as an attack on Colombia, calling for multinational cooperation against drug trafficking “without undermining national sovereignty.”
