Maryland State Police detained a Prince George’s County man after receiving multiple reports of gunfire fired from a car traveling on I-97 in Anne Arundel County.
The accused is Jose Gregario Cruz-Mendoza, 45, of Lanham, Maryland. Cruz-Mendoza has been charged with carrying a loaded handgun on person, having a loaded handgun in a vehicle, reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated, and other vehicle- and firearm-related offenses. He is being held without bond at the Jennifer Road Detention Center in Anne Arundel County.
At around 4:30 p.m. on August 17, 2025, officers from the Maryland State Police Annapolis Barrack received multiple reports of shots fired from a white Ford Excursion with Maryland plates going on MD Route 97 and then Route 50 in Annapolis.
Maryland State Troopers, assisted by officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department, spotted the Ford Excursion on westbound Route 50 at I-97 and stopped it. Cruz-Mendoza was the vehicle’s driver and sole occupant.
During the traffic stop, officers repeatedly asked Cruz-Mendoza to display his hands. Moments later, cops discovered him aggressively loading what seemed to be a handgun. Cruz-Mendoza was then arrested and taken to the Maryland State Police Annapolis Barrack for processing, where troopers discovered several symptoms of suspected impairment.
Police discovered a Highpoint .9mm handgun with an altered serial number, roughly 75 used round casings, and 247 live rounds in his vehicle after conducting an approved search.
