Sarah Hartsfield has been convicted of murdering her fifth husband, Joseph Hartsfield, two years ago by administering a fatal dose of insulin, authorities reported.
Joseph Hartsfield, who was diabetic and taking medication that increased his sensitivity to insulin, was admitted to a Houston-area hospital on January 7, 2023, with critically low blood sugar. Medical examiners determined insulin caused toxic effects that contributed to his death.
Investigators found multiple insulin pens near his bed. Detective Skyler Rocz said circumstantial evidence, including deleted internet searches and conflicting phone data, proved Sarah Hartsfield’s guilt. Messages sent from Joseph’s phone before his hospitalization allowed her access to his accounts after his death.
Relatives testified that Joseph had planned to leave Sarah due to their deteriorating relationship. His sister, Jeannie Hartsfield, said he feared she might try to harm him.
Sarah Hartsfield has a history of suspicious incidents. She was investigated in 2018 for the death of her fiancé, David Bragg, in Minnesota, and had been linked to earlier alleged murder plots and a 2014 fire in Missouri, though she was never charged in those cases.
