A teen hiker was discovered dead this month near a popular trail in the Marin Headlands.
The 17-year-old from San Rafael was discovered dead on August 12 along the water below the Battery Spencer overlook in Marin Headlands. His death looks to be an accident, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division.
Aaron Baten was recognized through a GoFundMe campaign. According to a post, the boy was “doing something that he really loved, hiking at Marin Headlands,” when he died in an accident.
The Battery Spencer overlook is one of the Marin Headlands’ most renowned spots, offering expansive views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco from 500 feet above sea level. The National Park Service describes the journey from Battery Spencer to the water’s edge as a “steep, mile-long trail.”
Baten was set to begin his senior year at San Rafael High School, according to KRON-TV. He was also a “much loved” employee of Boichik Bagels.
“We are deeply saddened about the tragic death of 17 year old Aaron Baten, our much loved team member of two years at Larkspur,” the company wrote in a social media post.
