A suspected DUI crash in southeast Bakersfield left a 6-year-old child critically injured and hospitalized a family Sunday morning, according to the Bakersfield Police Department (BPD).
Police said officers responded around 7:41 a.m. Sept. 28 to the intersection of Cottonwood Road and East Panama Lane, where they found a black sedan and a white SUV involved in the collision.
Investigators determined the sedan rear-ended the SUV at high speed, causing the SUV to roll over and the sedan to crash into a nearby vineyard.
The SUV driver, a woman, and her infant passenger suffered minor to moderate injuries. The 6-year-old passenger sustained major injuries. All three were rushed to a nearby hospital.
The sedan’s driver, 20-year-old Cesar Magana, allegedly showed signs of impairment and was taken into custody without incident. Police said Magana will be booked into the Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility on DUI-related charges once he is medically cleared.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call BPD at (661) 327-7111.
