Mariners on the Oregon and southwest Washington coasts are being advised to stay in port as a big ocean storm brings extremely dangerous seas and strong winds through Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service Portland, a storm warning is in force until 11 p.m. PDT Saturday for coastal waters from Cape Shoalwater, Washington, to Florence, Oregon, and up to 60 nautical miles offshore, including the Columbia River Bar.
Forecasters predict seas of 25 to 30 feet at 14-second intervals, with west to southwest winds of 30-40 mph and gusts up to 50 knots. Waves of 23 to 28 feet are forecast on the Columbia River Bar, making navigation extremely hazardous.
The National Weather Service warns that such conditions might cause vessels to capsize or be damaged, as well as dramatically impair visibility. Both recreational and commercial seafarers are advised to stay in port or seek immediate cover until the winds and seas lessen later tonight.
Wave heights are forecast to gradually diminish to roughly 9 feet by Sunday evening, although choppy seas will remain into the beginning of the week.
