A fast-moving thunderstorm is rushing over central and southwestern Mississippi Wednesday afternoon, with wind gusts of 60 mph and small hail in its path. The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Hinds, Claiborne, and Copiah counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the storm was near Learned at 3:04 p.m. CDT, moving southwest at 20 mph. It is forecast to produce strong gusts that may damage roofs, siding, and trees in the impacted areas. The warning is in place until 4 p.m. CDT and covers northeastern Claiborne, southwestern Hinds, and northern Copiah counties.
Communities along the storm’s path include:
- Learned by 3:10 p.m.
- Utica by 3:15 p.m.
- Newman by 3:30 p.m.
- Reganton by 3:35 p.m.
- Carpenter by 3:40 p.m.
Residents in these regions are advised to seek refuge in inner rooms, avoid windows, and avoid outdoor activities until the storm has passed.
The radar shows a minimal hail hazard, with hail up to 0.75 inches in diameter. Tornadoes are not forecast, but severe winds pose a major risk to mobile homes, trees, and unsecured outdoor goods.
The Severe Thunderstorm Warning will expire at 4 p.m. CDT, but more advisories may be issued if storms intensify or new cells form later this evening.
