A tragic episode occurred in Scottsdale over the weekend when street racing turned lethal. A 21-year-old man died after an accident at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort, while another driver was arrested on manslaughter and various endangerment counts, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
According to Scottsdale Police, Nicholas Meath, 21, died after his automobile collided with a pillar at high speed while participating in an illegal race. Meath was apparently battling against Cameron Groom, 27, when he lost control of his car. According to court documents acquired by ABC 15, the two were allegedly driving at speeds of up to 120 mph in a 45-mph zone.
The groom is now facing major legal consequences for his suspected involvement in the fatal incident. Witnesses informed officials that the duo began their race at a stoplight on Cheney Drive, driving away as the light turned green. The subsequent incident occurred when, according to authorities, an unknown van made a left turn onto Scottsdale Road, causing Meath’s car to spin out of control and collide with the concrete pillar with such force that it broke into many pieces, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
As the debris flew, close observers at the resort entrance narrowly avoided injury, with at least three people injured by flying glass while attempting to flee the scene. The aftermath was fatal for Meath, who died on the scene, and emotionally devastating for a father and his two daughters, who were able to relocate their SUV seconds before the incident after hearing the screeching tires, according to interviews with FOX 10 Phoenix. According to online court records, Groom had been cited for a number of traffic violations prior to the event, including speeding and unsafe lane changes.
The Scottsdale Police Department acknowledged that the investigation is still ongoing, as reported by ABC 15. Meanwhile, Groom, who had remained at the crash site, was taken into jail. With the law progressively piecing together the story of that fatal night, one family mourns a life taken too soon, while another man faces the consequences of his actions behind bars.
