A 55-year-old man, identified as Jay Tony Naotala, was arrested Friday in connection with sending narcotics through the mail to a correctional facility.
The arrest occurred at the North County Superior Court while Naotala was attending an unrelated hearing. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of multiple charges, including bringing a controlled substance into a jail.
The case stems from a narcotic-laced letter sent via the U.S. mail on July 17 to an inmate at the Las Collinas Detention and Reentry Facility. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Mailing Processing Center intercepted the letter before it reached the inmate.
San Diego County Sheriff’s officials emphasized that sending any controlled substance into a jail is a felony, carrying a penalty of up to six years in custody.
