Pursuit suspect crashes stolen ambulance from Downey homicide scene

Police arrested a man Saturday after he stole an ambulance from a Downey homicide investigation and crashed during a pursuit.

Officers responded around 9:40 a.m. to the 11000 block of Brockshire Avenue after reports of a stabbing victim outside the Downey Library, according to a Downey Police Department news release.

When officers arrived, they found a male victim suffering from a stab wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported the stabbing suspect—a 23-year-old transient—fled on foot toward Downey High School. Police placed the library and school on lockdown before arresting him without further incident.

As emergency crews worked at the library, a different man allegedly stole a Downey Fire Department ambulance parked at the scene. Police said the suspect, a 52-year-old Los Angeles man, led officers on a chase before crashing into a parked car in Alhambra. He was taken into custody without further incident.

“Detectives from the Downey Police Department are actively investigating both incidents and following all available leads. These incidents appear to be isolated, and the investigation is ongoing,” the department said.

Investigators urged anyone with information to call (562) 904-2332.
