A woman was discovered dead with “brain matter visible” after her daughter allegedly beat her with a rock.
Carrie Zettel called 911 at 2:06 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, to report that her daughter, Lauren Spors, 29, was “being violent.” When officers arrived 14 minutes later, they found Zettel with “severe trauma to her head with brain matter visible,” covered in blood near her home. A blood-stained rock was discovered in the grass beside her corpse, and she was pronounced dead shortly afterward, according to WTMJ.
Officers detained Spors, who was covered in what seemed to be her mother’s blood. According to neighbors who spoke with WTMJ, Spors was observed sleeping on Zettel’s front lawn the morning before the attack and pacing back and forth in front of the house about an hour before the incident.
In a 2018 petition for a temporary restraining order, Zettel stated that her daughter “threatened life with a knife in hand after she struck her father repeatedly on [his] head with heavy decorative bottles.” Zettel also alleged that her daughter threw heavy items at them and refused to remain at a halfway home. Zettel claimed her daughter had even pushed her father’s head through the drywall. According to WDJT-TV, a neighbor stated that the father died a few days later.
According to WTMJ, Spors violated a no-contact order multiple times, but doctors ruled she was unable to proceed with court procedures.
Spors wrote in a letter immediately after her father’s death, “I still haven’t accepted my father’s death.” My mother claims I killed him, but I don’t recall doing it.” She admitted to acting out because of her mental disorder.
When speaking with WITI, the CEO of the Sojourner Family Peace Center stated that “the system has failed,” adding, “It does sound like she did everything we would suggest she do, and that’s what makes it even more painful.”
In a complaint that WITI obtained, friends assert that Zettel disclosed to them her daughter’s diagnosis of schizophrenia.
According to criminal allegations, Spors broke a domestic abuse injunction in March and April of 2018. Documents say that in December 2021, she hurled rocks through windows at 2 a.m. to gain access to Zettel’s residence, resulting in her arrest and misdemeanor violence and theft charges.
According to WTMJ, Spors appeared in court on Tuesday and could face life in prison if convicted.
