Authorities are investigating the death of a 50-year-old Perris man, who was shot by an off-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy in a remote area along the Orange and Riverside county line.
Deputies from the Lake Mathews Sheriff’s Station responded to multiple reports of a shooting at 8:15 p.m. Friday near Holy Jim Trail and Main Divide Road, close to Santiago Peak, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD).
The deputy, whose name has not been released, reportedly encountered a man who appeared intoxicated and was armed. The RCSD stated that the deputy identified himself as law enforcement and issued multiple commands to raise his hands.
“The man refused to comply and removed his firearm from its holster, prompting the off-duty deputy to open fire,” the department said.
The man, later identified as Agustin Vazquez Calvillo, was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. No additional injuries were reported, and authorities secured the area.
The Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail has taken over the investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact California Highway Patrol Detective Daniel Kavert or Riverside County Sheriff’s Investigator Martin Alfaro at 951-955-2777.
