A man died and three women were hospitalized Sunday after a pickup truck slammed into a parked vehicle in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The crash happened around 4:20 p.m. near 100 N. Chicago Street at First Street, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
Los Angeles police said the victims were all inside the westbound pickup. The collision killed the man in the front passenger seat and ejected three women riding in the truck bed.
Paramedics pronounced a man in his 20s dead at the scene. Crews rushed three women to a trauma center — one in critical condition and two in serious condition. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to free one of the victims trapped in the wreckage, Humphrey said.
The 25-year-old driver allegedly fled on foot but police later took him into custody, LAPD Officer D. Orris confirmed. Investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. LAPD’s traffic division continues to investigate.
