An Ohio man is facing fraud charges after police said he impersonated an officer to scam a Kentucky woman.
It all started on September 17, when investigators in Clay County said a woman was approached by a man who told her she would be charged with crimes and was instructed to acquire money.
While the victim was on the phone with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy overheard a male in the background telling her to go home and wait until no one was around. He’d call and come to her house.
Later that day, Clay County 911 reported that 21-year-old Danil Dovzhuk of Loveland, Ohio, showed up at the victim’s house, and the family confronted him. They informed police that Dovzhuk had departed the site.
A deputy caught up with Dovzhuk and stopped him at the intersection of U.S. 421 and U.S. 11. Police said the vehicle had interceptor marks and seemed to be unmarked. Dovzhuk was detained.
As the inquiry progressed, police stated the victim’s son arrived at the site and reported that Dovzhuk had “taken a substantial amount of money.”
Dovzhuk was accused of theft by fraud and impersonating a peace officer.
He is currently being held at the Clay County Detention Center without bond.
Clay County is approximately three hours south of Louisville.
