A multi-vehicle crash Thursday evening on the 405 Freeway threw traffic into chaos after a Santa Monica motorcycle officer went down, forcing a shutdown of the northbound lanes and creating miles-long backups.
KTLA reported that the collision near Roscoe Boulevard brought LAPD officers rushing to the scene, where they discovered the officer lying in the carpool lane around 8 p.m.
The Santa Monica Police Department later confirmed the officer was off-duty and riding home on his department-issued motorcycle when the accident occurred.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the officer suffered only minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
No other drivers were injured, KTLA noted. Authorities have not said how long the northbound lanes would remain closed as investigators examined the crash and crews cleared the roadway.
