A head-on crash near Grafton on Friday morning left three people hospitalized, two of whom were seriously injured.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:53 a.m. on North Dakota Highway 17 around mile marker 129, east of Grafton. A 2024 Ford Escape heading eastbound attempted to pass a farm tractor towing a chisel plow, crossing the centerline and colliding with a westbound 1992 Ford F150.
A 70-year-old Cavalier woman drove the Ford Escape and was seriously injured. Her passenger, a 65-year-old Grafton man, suffered significant injuries as well. Both were wearing seat belts, and airbags deployed throughout the crash. The two were sent to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks for treatment.
The F150 was driven by a juvenile who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Their names have not been disclosed. Authorities observed that dense fog was prevalent at the time of the collision, which could have been a contributing factor.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol, Grafton Police Department, Walsh County Sheriff’s Department, Grafton Fire Department, and Valley Ambulance Service all responded to the incident.
The Highway Patrol reported that the farm implement was not directly engaged in the crash. The crash is still under investigation.
