New Storm Could Dump Half A Foot Or More Of Snow Across Parts Of The Northeast: Latest Update

A major storm headed for the Northeast might bring the season’s first widespread snowfall, with some regions expecting a half-foot or more.

After a bout of rain falls in the afternoon and early evening on Sunday, Nov. 30, National Weather Service meteorologists predict that the rain will end rapidly from west to east on Sunday night.

However, the gap will be brief. Forecasters predict that the latest storm system will arrive Monday evening, Dec. 1, bringing widespread snow, ice, and a wintry mix on Tuesday, Dec. 2, as well as rain farther south and along the coast.

By Tuesday, the majority of the Northeast, including Pennsylvania, New York, northern New Jersey, and New England, will have snow or a combination of snow and sleet on the cooler side of the storm. Other locations will receive largely rain.

AccuWeather predicts that most regions in the storm’s path will receive 1 to 6 inches of snow. However, a “pocket of heavier snow is possible from the Catskills of New York and the Berkshires of Connecticut and Massachusetts to perhaps southeastern Maine.” Localized totals might reach a foot.

The storm is likely to move rapidly, limiting heavy precipitation. Still, roadways might get slick for a while, particularly in the northern and western suburbs of major cities such as Philadelphia and New York, where snow could stay for several hours.

Forecasters say a rapidly growing secondary storm off the coast could also deliver a blast of cold air down the Hudson Valley, perhaps changing rain into snow for New York City and complicating transport.

Boston is expected to have a mix of snow and rain, with slushy conditions possible until Tuesday night. Heavy snow is expected north and west of the city, making driving more dangerous.

On Tuesday, Washington, DC, is projected to receive all or most of its rainfall.

Precipitation should end Tuesday night, with a return to sunny but chilly weather on Wednesday, December 3.

“Cold is forecast to dominate the weather pattern from the Plains to much of the East during the first 10 days of December,” AccuWeather Senior Long-Range Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said.
