Two people were taken into custody this week in New Caney after being found “actively” stealing thousands of dollars in copper wire.
According to a press release from the Montgomery County Constable, officials responded to an allegation of a probable metal theft near Grand Parkway and FM 1485 East. The caller reported that a suspect was loading copper wire into a red Toyota Camry.
Deputies from Precinct 4 responded and found the vehicle described by the witness, as well as a man “actively stuffing wire into the rear of the vehicle.”
The man, Kerry Crenshaw Jr., 35, of New Caney, was arrested without incident.
The Texas Department of Transportation determined that the wire crammed into the car was worth around $5,000. The damage to surrounding electrical boxes was estimated at $10,000.
Crenshaw was charged with felony theft of metal. Brown has been charged with felony theft of metal and misdemeanor avoiding arrest.
In a statement, Constable Rowdy Hayden commended the witness for reporting the suspicious conduct and noted, “Copper theft disrupts lighting and safety systems and puts our community at risk.”
