Navy seizes 1.5 tons of meth at Mazatlán port

The Mexican navy seized 1.5 tons of methamphetamine this week at the port of Mazatlán, dealing a major blow to the Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa cartel, according to reports.

The Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR) said members of the Naval Ports Protection Unit discovered the drug inside a tractor-trailer after X-ray scans revealed anomalies.

Three drug-sniffing dogs then led officers to the truck’s bed, where they uncovered 494 plastic-wrapped bundles and six plastic bags filled with meth. A video released by SEMAR shows naval personnel and army soldiers using tools and welding equipment to extract the packages.

Authorities estimated the shipment could have produced 1.5 million doses on the street.

Officials have not announced any arrests or disclosed the truck’s intended destination.

Mexican outlets linked the haul to the Chapitos, a powerful Sinaloa cartel faction that U.S. authorities blame for trafficking fentanyl and other drugs into American cities.
