A 43-year-old motorcyclist from Merced County was killed in a three-vehicle crash Monday night on U.S. Highway 101 in South San Jose, authorities said.
The collision happened around 8:45 p.m. on southbound Highway 101, just north of Capitol Expressway, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Investigators said a 2001 Yamaha Roadster began fishtailing for an unknown reason before overturning, leaving both the rider and motorcycle in the number 2 lane.
Moments later, a 2018 Kia traveling behind struck the fallen rider and motorcycle, causing the Kia to overturn. The impact also sent the Yamaha into a 2023 Tesla that had stopped at the scene, the CHP said.
The motorcyclist died at the scene, while the Kia driver suffered minor injuries.
Five of the six southbound lanes were closed for nearly three hours as crews investigated and cleared the wreckage.
The CHP continues to investigate the cause of the crash and urges anyone with information to contact the San Jose CHP office at (408) 961-0900.
