Motorcyclist Killed, Another Driver Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101 in San Jose

A motorcyclist died and another driver was injured Monday night in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 101 in San Jose, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. on southbound 101 north of Capitol Expressway in South San Jose. Investigators said a 2001 Yamaha Roadster began fishtailing for unknown reasons before overturning, sending both the motorcycle and its rider into the number 2 lane.

Moments later, a 2018 Kia traveling in the same lane struck the downed motorcycle and rider, causing the Kia to overturn, the CHP said. The impact also pushed the Yamaha into a 2023 Tesla that had stopped nearby.

The 43-year-old motorcyclist from Merced County was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Kia driver suffered minor injuries, according to officials.

Five of the six southbound lanes were closed for about three hours as crews cleared the wreckage and investigators examined the scene.

The CHP said the crash remains under investigation, and all preliminary details are subject to change. Anyone with information is urged to contact the San Jose CHP office at (408) 961-0900.
