Holiday travelers in Missouri may face slick and unpredictable roadways from Friday night to early Sunday as a wintry mix moves across the state. Snow, pockets of freezing rain, and a rain-snow mix are all expected, increasing worries for those driving after dark Friday or returning from Thanksgiving parties.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the majority of Missouri is at risk for light to moderate snowfall, with northeast Missouri having the highest probability of accumulations that could impede traffic. Probability maps released Wednesday emphasize a line from St. Joseph to Kirksville where the chance of at least an inch of snow increases dramatically. The agency also mentions the possibility of more than three inches in several northeast counties.
Road crews in Kansas City, Independence, and Liberty are prepared to salt roads ahead of the first wave of precipitation Friday evening. Drivers on I-70, Highway 36, and highways heading to Chillicothe and Macon should prepare for limited visibility and spotty ice, particularly overnight. Officials recommend postponing non-essential travel, keeping vehicles fueled, and bringing blankets and chargers in case of delays.
The wintry mix is predicted to dissipate by early Sunday, but more advisories may be issued if colder air penetrates or snow bands migrate southward. Stay tuned for updated statements during the weekend.
