Mississippi Teen Charged as Adult in Grandmother’s Beating Death at Church

A Mississippi teenager has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder after allegedly confessing to the fatal beating of his 73-year-old grandmother inside a church.

Jadynn Hamilton, 17, is being held on a $500,000 bond in connection with the death of Ollie Hamilton. Paramedics pronounced Ms. Hamilton dead at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday after responding to a 911 call from Smith Chapel Holiness Church in Athens, according to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley.

Monroe County Sheriff Kevin Crook told local media that early evidence from the scene led deputies to Jadynn Hamilton, who had initially sought help for his grandmother. He later confessed to the crime during questioning.

“This is a tragedy of the worst kind,” Sheriff Crook said, emphasizing that the victim was a cherished member of the family and community, and the accused is also “another beloved family member.”

No motive has been disclosed. Sheriff Crook stated that the teen had no prior criminal history, suggesting the violence may have been an impulsive act directed at whoever was present. Hamilton is being prosecuted as an adult.
