A husband and wife in Mississippi were arrested after authorities investigating the disappearance of his 81-year-old mother discovered a body buried in the backyard of their home.
The case began Saturday when a family member reported Carol Ryan missing to the Jackson Police Department. She was supposed to be at a nursing home in Brandon, just outside Jackson, but had not been seen or heard from in several months.
Jackson Police Chief Tyree Jones said the investigation led officers to Ryan’s former home, now occupied by her 50-year-old son John Ryan and his 48-year-old wife Samantha Ryan. All three had previously lived in the home.
After obtaining a warrant, investigators searched the backyard, where cadaver dogs indicated the presence of human remains. Excavators were brought in, revealing a body wrapped in a tarp and covered in concrete, buried six to eight feet deep.
Authorities said the medical examiner will identify the remains and determine the cause and manner of death. Chief Jones noted the body had been buried long before Carol Ryan was reported missing, though the exact timeframe is unclear. The missing person investigation will continue until the remains are positively identified.
John and Samantha Ryan were each charged with desecration of a human corpse. John Ryan is being held at the Hinds County Jail on a $100,000 bond, and Samantha Ryan on a $75,000 bond.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges could be filed as more evidence comes to light.
