A nearly 50-hour search for a missing woman in Marion County came to a tragic end Monday evening when authorities found her body.
Marion County Emergency Management officials announced that Catherine Ann Martin, 62, who had been missing since Saturday, was discovered dead in a wooded area near her home on Fire Tower Road in the Pine Burr subdivision. The finding was made at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Officials said search-and-rescue teams from Mississippi and Louisiana spent hours looking over a two-mile stretch of dense woods, waterways, and steep terrain.
The search also included helicopters, drones, and around 70 volunteers who endured the windy, cold, and wet weather all day Sunday.
On Monday, a search dog discovered the first evidence of Martin and led a team of responders into the wooded area on foot. As nightfall came, law enforcement officers continued to secure the site.
Martin was reported missing at roughly 3 p.m. Saturday. Emergency officials did not provide any additional information, saying their primary emphasis remains on comforting the family and finishing the investigation.
