A Miami woman faces two felony charges after police said she attacked her 71-year-old neighbor at a Liberty City apartment complex, striking her 24 times.
Police arrested Keondra Tatiana Berry, 42, on Monday in connection with the May 22 incident.
According to investigators, the victim stood in the parking lot of the complex at 6040 NW 12th Ave. when Berry began shouting at her from a balcony. The arrest report did not specify what Berry allegedly yelled.
Berry then hurled a can of beans from the balcony. It missed the woman but struck her car, leaving a dent, police said.
Moments later, Berry ran downstairs, retrieved the can, and confronted the woman as she tried to retreat to her apartment. “As the victim grabbed onto a post for stability, Berry struck her with a closed fist,” the report stated.
Police said Berry paused briefly but then forced her way inside the woman’s apartment without permission. There, she delivered 23 more punches as the victim was “backed against a sofa.”
Berry allegedly grabbed the woman’s Samsung phone—and the can of beans—before fleeing. Outside, she smashed the phone repeatedly against the ground and tossed it into a nearby sewer drain, police said. Officers later recovered it, damaged but intact.
On Monday, police located Berry at a Publix in Hialeah and arrested her on charges of burglary with assault or battery, battery on a person 65 or older, and misdemeanor criminal mischief.
Authorities said Berry initially agreed to speak with investigators but later stayed silent after the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office advised her to.
Jail records show Berry remains held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
