A months-long theft spree at a jewelry store in downtown Miami ended with the arrest of Nubia Milena Torres-Cubillos, 45, after a thorough police investigation. Miami Police stated that the Colombian national employed at the jewelry store reportedly stole more than $100,000 in merchandise between June and August. The stolen items included sections of a Cuban link chain and several gold bracelets.
The jewelry store’s owner first noticed the disappearances in September, prompting a check of store surveillance footage that revealed Torres-Cubillos’ activity. According to WSVN, the employee allegedly took high-value jewelry in little amounts to avoid detection. According to the police complaint, Torres would hide the products in her purse and sell them at pawn shops.
To exacerbate the matter, Local 10 News released CCTV footage depicting Torres-Cubillos’ thieving methods. Torres-Cubillos ‘looked to move unnaturally in an effort to avoid the links creating noise,'” the arrest report claimed, according to Local 10 News. She appears to have covered stolen items in paper and her clothing, moving them unobserved to various locations of the jewelry store before taking them away.
Detectives discovered many pieces of high-priced jewelry among the pawned items, including a set of 18K yellow gold Van Cleef-style bracelets and an emerald stone necklace, all of which had been pawned for fractions of their value. Torres-Cubillos was arrested and charged with grand theft, an organized plot to defraud, and other connected felonies. Torres remains under arrest after exercising her right to counsel, with immigration detention complicating her legal status.
The arrest on September 9 was captured on police bodycam film, and officers took Torres-Cubillos into custody after the investigation was completed. Her bond has already been set by a court, but she remains in custody, according to Miami Police.
